We all manage difficult people in our lives. However, what do we do after we’ve tried the usual conflict resolution methods and these people don’t respond but become worse in their behaviors? They’ve gone beyond being difficult. They’re acting beastly and adversely affecting all around them. Allowing them to continue would cause great harm. They need to be dealt with now.

Jack presents a two-fold program designed to provide us with a practical approach that works. It is based on Two Truths: that people know what they are doing and they need to be held responsible for their choices.

We begin the process by discovering the goals of their purposeful behaviors. Then we need to choose to become pro-active by developing a plan based on the premise that the beastly person must be responsible and held accountable for his/her actions, entitled to the consequences that result. Learning how to avoid being manipulated by their excuses such as: “I’m sorry … I promise, etc.” will help us guard against becoming a society of non-responsibility.

Meet our expert:

Jack is a presenter and trainer in the area of human relations and management. He has combined his education and experiences into a practical and common sense series of presentations relating to the successful management of the Social Aspects of Business. For over twenty five years as a professional speaker, his appearances at conferences and business engagements have earned him a reputation for useful and relevant material combined with humor that makes learning enjoyable.

Jack is a graduate of West Virginia University with a Master's degree in Counseling and has done post-graduate work at the University of Vermont. Print Savvy’s Savvy Workshop is proud to announce that we have been selected as one of ten Decade Designers for the upcoming Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Centennial Celebration. The Centennial Celebration will be this year’s rendition of the Annual Dinner, and celebrate the exact 100th Anniversary of the Chamber’s incorporation. The Annual Dinner is the Chamber’s most prestigious event, and this year’s Centennial Celebration will definitely be the event of the century!

After a thorough interview process, only ten creative agencies were selected as Decade Designers and are tasked to develop individual, interactive displays to celebrate the greater Manchester area’s many accomplishments during an assigned decade. Savvy will be presenting achievements between 1941 – 1950, which some call the “Fighting Forties” decade. The resulting decade exhibits will be revealed as a living museum at this evening event on April 21, 2011 at the Verizon Wireless Area.

“We at Savvy Workshop were honored to accept the responsibility of designing the decade from 1941-1950. Given that we use the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter regularly in our marketing materials, we were especially excited to take this time span on,” said Lisa Landry, President and Founder of The Savvy Workshop and its sister company, Print Savvy. “This was such a pivotal time in our nation’s history as well as a time when many changes were transpiring within the Greater Manchester business community,” Landry continued “We plan to bring the Can Do! GETTING CREATIVE IN A DIFFICULT JOB MARKET August 26, 2010

Manchester, NH
By all accounts, last night’s Gainful Employment Seminar at Savvy Workshop was a huge success. Initiated by Lisa Landry, President and CEO of Print Savvy, Inc. and the Savvy Workshop, the meeting was well attended and facilitated by Fran Allain, Employee Retention Project Manager for the State of New Hampshire's Department of Resources and Economic Development Office.

Fran shared her heart-wrenching story about her own difficult layoff and her personal journey to finding meaningful employment again, after reinventing herself and her career. Having had the experience herself, she understands and empathizes with those affected by the most recent downturn. She gave us an overview of the programs, job boards and support systems available through the State of New Hampshire and the Department of Resources and Economic Development to those currently looking for work.

Also on hand were Greg Fall, Vice President at Career Management Associates of Bedford NH and Pam Oliwa, the Rapid Response Coordinator for the NH Department of Economic Resources. Both Greg and Pam shared ideas and strategies for getting hired. Greg also gave an extensive class on resume development and met one on one with each candidate to discuss specific strategies that will help them to stand out and differentiate themselves from the crowded field of applicants that might be also seeking the same position.

Together, they explored the best ways to increase a job seeker’s value in the marketplace. Most attendees were unemployed an average of 18 months – but some as few as 3 or 4 weeks. Also in attendance were currently employed individual, looking to make a change, recent college grads, or under-employed professionals looking for more gainful employment.

“I’ve been in the job market for over 25 years, and this is definitely the most difficult job market I’ve ever seen. My inbox has been flodded with resumes for the past two years. Most of these folks are talented, hard working, experienced professionals that I know and have worked with in the past. I wanted to do something to help them and to let them know their value is still there – and that there is light at the end of the tunnel!”

The Savvy Workshop will be hosting a second session to further support our friends and colleagues who are seeking gainful employment on Sept 8, 2010 from 6 – 9 PM. Savvy Chef's Stuffed Portabella Caps
As Seen on WMUR's Cook's Corner 4/2/10

4 Large Portabella Mushrooms
1 can black beans, drained and well-rinsed
2c whole grain or protein of your choice (brown rice, quinoa, etc.)
1/2c salsa
1t cumin
1/2c shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Chopped fresh cilantro to taste

Pre-heat oven or toaster oven to broil setting
Clean and remove stem from mushrooms
Place caps gill side up on a baking sheet
In a bowl, mix beans, rice, salsa and cumin together
Spoon mixture onto mushroom caps
Sprinkle with shredded cheese
Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until cheese is melted and slightly brown around the edges
Sprinkle with cilantro

A. Public Transportation
1. (buses, subways, trains):
a. Do not fall asleep on any of the above modes of transportation; stay awake and alert at all times.
b. Keep all valuables in front of you.
c. Distribute valuables among several pockets. That way, if someone tries to rob you, you may only have to surrender valuables in one pocket.
d. Keep a distance from the path of oncoming transportation.
e. Do not let someone stand directly behind you when waiting for transportation; they could easily push you into the path of a vehicle.
f. When waiting for transportation, try to mingle within the crowd; a lone traveler is an easy target.
g. When carrying valuables, (pocketbooks, briefcase, camera case) keep them close to you (on your legs or in your hands). Do not place them down on the seat.
h. Do not flash a lot of money when paying for a fare or ticket.
i. Stay in a well-lit area. Do not wait in dark areas.
j. Never board on an empty subway car. Always try to board the central area of transportation. Most people get on and remain there (trains, subways).
k. Make the most use out of public transportation. Minimize your walking distance.
l. Do not use public transportation if you have been drinking or are ill. You will become a ready target in a danger zone.
m. When getting off public transportation, always take note of your environment and the people in it.
n. Bathrooms in public transportation terminals are very dangerous. Be aware of surroundings when using these facilities.
o. Don’t choose the window seat as you may be blocked in by a “potential assailant;” always choose an aisle seat for a quick exit.
2. Taxi’s
a. Always check the identification of the driver (usually located near the visor) and ensure that it matches the driver.
b. Be wary of cars with central locking.
c. Don’t sit behind the driver; always choose the adjacent seat.
d. Always order taxis so that the driver can be traced.
e. Avoid flagging taxis from the street.
B. Private Transportation (cars):
1. Have keys ready before heading to a car.
2. Be aware of your surroundings while walking to your car. Make sure that no one is following you.
3. As you approach your car, check underneath it.
4. Check the back seat before getting into the vehicle.
5. Keep all doors locked.
6. Keep windows rolled at least ¾ up when stopped at a traffic light.
7. If you left your car in good condition and it does not start when you come back, be suspicious immediately.
a. Do not accept unsolicited offers of assistance.
b. Do not unlock the door to admit a stranger.
8. Avoid driving your vehicle through areas you know are crime infested.
9. If you see a motorist who needs assistance, drive to a phone and send help. Do not stop.
10. Do not get out of your car in a dark, remote location, even if you have been involved in a car accident. Drive to an open service station and call the police. The accident may have been deliberate.
11. If your car breaks down, unlock the hood and raise it. Get back in the car and try to have someone call the police.
12. When valet parking, take your house keys off your key ring. Also, remove any other valuables or papers which may indicate your home address.
13. Do not display accessories such as iPods, cell phones, GPS systems, etc., where they will attract a thief’s attention.
14. If, while you are driving, you believe someone is following you –
DO NOT...
a. Pull off to the side of the road to see if the person will pass.
b. Travel down side streets.
c. Go home.
DO...
a. Pull into a well-lit gas station or store and see if the other person also pulls in or goes away.
b. Stay on well-lit, heavily traveled streets.
c. Keep windows rolled up and doors locked.
d. Slow down your pace so you are observed by other vehicles. Beep your horn if necessary.
e. Drive directly to a police station, fire station, or hospital emergency room.
f. If the follower panics and speeds past your car, be sure to get his/her license number.
15. If someone attempts to enter your car at a stoplight or stop sign, drive away, sounding your horn, even if it means running a red light. In general, turn to the right when driving away.
16. Always approach your vehicle with the keys ready.
17. Windows should be up and doors locked even when driving to avoid unwanted passengers at intersections. (Please note that this conflicts with quick entering and exit procedures in the event of an accident.)
18. Always check your car before entering.
19. Never leave your car unlocked, even for the few minutes it may take you to return a video, or buy milk, etc.
20. Never get into a car, even if someone is pointing a knife or a handgun at you from inside. Just start to run away from the car, screaming at the same time. It’s much more likely that he will drive away to find an easier target than try attacking or killing you. But if you get into the car, he has a much better opportunity to drive you to a quiet place and start to abuse you, and later, maybe kill you.
21. Never pull your car over on a quiet road, even if someone drives alongside your car pointing at your tires, etc. Always continue driving to a well-lit and crowded area before exiting your car. The problem might be a bluff and the driver wants you to stop at the side of the road to “help” you without a reason.
22. Always be alert in parking lots, especially when it’s dark. If you are afraid, don’t be too shy to ask someone to escort you to your car. Between cars and alongside cars, it’s easy for someone to hide and wait until a non-alert person comes along.
C. Street Security (walking, jogging, and bike riding):
1. Do not carry more money or valuables than you can afford to lose.
2. If approached by a robber, cooperate. Surrender your valuables. They are worth less than you are.
3. If the robber attempts to physically harm you, defend yourself.
4. Walk on the side of the street facing oncoming traffic.
5. On a busy street, carry your purse or briefcase on the side farthest from the curb.
6. Carry a shoulder strap purse so that it hangs straight down from your shoulder, suspended between your arm and your body. The strap should not cross your body.
7. Carry handbags with a short strap as you would a football, with your hand placed through the strap, clutching the bag.
8. If you are being followed on a well-traveled street, indicate to your pursuer that you are aware of him/her by: slowing down, speeding up, or reversing directions. Then go straight for help.
9. If followed on a deserted street, walk briskly to a well-lit and populated area. Do not run straight for home unless help is available there.
10. Running, screaming, and the use of a loud whistle are recommended defensive weapons. But do not keep whistles around your neck.
11. If you must carry large amounts of money, do not keep it all in one place.
12. Do not carry keys in the same place as identification that would tell a robber where to find the door the key fits into.
13. Avoid walking the streets alone after dark. Use a taxi whenever practical.
14. If you must walk alone at night, do not walk near cars parked at the curb, or close to doorways or shrubbery which could conceal a mugger.
15. If necessary, do not hesitate to walk in the street.
16. If you must walk streets at night regularly, vary your routine to minimize the possibility of someone lying in wait to assault you.
17. Do not act or look like an easy target – look CONFIDENT!
18. If shadowed by a car, run back in the direction from which you came. If you continue in the same direction, you will make it easy for the shadowing to continue.
19. Don’t use a Walkman or iPod when walking in isolated areas at any time.
20. Regularly change your routines.
21. Don’t presume that just because your area has been “safe” thus far, it will continue to be so.
D. Clothing
1. Think about your clothing – where will it be worn? Will you be going out after work? Get into the habit of leaving restrictive clothing and shoes for those occasions when you are certain that you have no reason to anticipate danger, such as large crowds, being picked up after work or going out and so forth.
2. Choose a wardrobe which maximizes freedom of movement. The best self-defense techniques will not help you if you cannot run away because of tight skirts or shoes with straps and high heels. In these situations, it will be necessary to disable your attacker to ensure that you are not followed unless you have some means of quick exit such as a motor vehicle. This places additional, unnecessary pressure on you to be successful. Further, if you focus too much attention on disabling your opponent, you may not be sufficiently aware of an additional threat to yourself.

It’s the Economy – You’re Not Stupid!

I’ve been around the block before, once or twice. I officially started my career after graduating from college in 1986. With my degree in hand, I secured a sales position working for a web publications printer located in Manchester, NH. I was ambitious, goal oriented and extremely motivated to make my mark on the New England printing industry and I quickly rose to the top of the sales team within that company. Ready for a new challenge, I changed jobs in 1989 to broaden my knowledge and explore new sales territories. Little did I know, recession had set in and was wholloping the advertising and graphic design firms hard, with Boston shops (my new territory) especially hard-hit. I found that I needed to reinvent myself – and my offerings – in order to preserve the hard won clientele I’d earned and to continue to grow as a sales professional. I went back to school with a new emphasis on marketing, more of a big picture approach than my first degree in Graphic Arts had offered. I attended every sales and professional development seminar I could and read and listened to countless business books, motivational CDs, sales bibles, you name it. I was a consummate professional, eager to learn the skills and tools that I would need to succeed in a difficult economic climate.

Looking back, I know that it was during that earlier recession that I found out what I was made of. I think that it is easy for most folks to get along fairly well during times of plenty, but, as the old adage says, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It was during my first career downturn that I proved to myself how ‘tough’ I could be. I learned to compete for business opportunities like my life depended on it. And, let’s face it, it did!

Since that time, I’ve seen many boom years with a few ‘bust’ years thrown in, especially for certain industries. Over all of this time, I have found that reinventing myself has become part of the deal. If I don’t currently have what the market wants, I need to find a way to offer it.

Times are tough again, as most of you reading this have probably experienced first-hand. Never before have I seen such a widespread downturn in so many critical industries and it seems as difficult as any time I remember in my 20 year career to find good job opportunities to get a career going – or restarted – on the right track.

If you are a young professional, a recent grad or a more seasoned veteran transitioning to a new industry or position, take heart. Tough times never last but tough people do. You already have what it takes to succeed, within you. Sure it takes tenacity and perseverance. It takes courage and faith, too. But these are all qualities that reside within you. Separate yourself from the pack by not whining and complaining about the economy and know that somehow, somewhere, someone (maybe you?) is finding a way to make their mark, despite the economic downturn, despite any disadvantage (real or perceived) they might have had to overcome.

Real winners acted like winners before they won. They believed in themselves. Sure, the economy sucks, but you are not stupid. Change it up! Learn what you need to know to move forward. Read more, pick up a class, attend a seminar, invest in yourself. Find a mentor or two and learn from other smart, successful people you meet how they became who they are today. You will likely find out that we all have had to pay our dues along the path to professional growth. You become extraordinary by going that extra mile. Believe in yourself and the power of your dreams then go out there and show the world what you’ve got!
